What is Hypnosis?

Clinical HypnotherapyIt may be surprising to many to learn that we experience trance states many times in the course of our lives. Even passing into ordinary sleep involves a kind of trance state. The experience of hypnosis is similar: neither asleep nor awake and a little like daydreaming, with a pleasant feeling of deep relaxation behind it all. More about hypnosis and hypnotherapy...

Hypnosis is a different state of consciousness which you can naturally enter so that, for therapeutic purposes, beneficial corrections may be given directly to your unconscious mind.

In this way, hypnosis is an effective way of making contact with our inner (unconscious) self, which is both a reservoir of unrecognised potential and knowledge as well as being the unwitting source of many of our problems.

It is a fact that no-one can be hypnotised against their will and even when hypnotised, a person can still reject any suggestion. Thus therapeutic hypnosis is a state of purposeful (confidential) co-operation. More about the definitions of hypnosis...

Today, Clinical Hypnotherapy means using advanced methods of hypnosis and other techniques to treat a variety of medical and psychological problems. It is estimated that 85%++ of people will readily respond to clinical hypnotherapy (the remaining % can still be treated using other techniques that Changing States provide as a matter of routine). It may even succeed where other, more conventional methods of treatment have not produced the desired results. Click here for case histories... (PDF)

Modern Clinical Hypnotherapy is an 'integrative' field of study. This means that the best elements of many other forms of therapy have been integrated into Clinical Hypnotherapy. This includes behavioural psychology, cognitive psychology, EMDR, NLP as well as the most effective elements from the classical theories proposed by Freud, Jung and Adler, as well as the latest physiological research in terms of how the mind functions.

Analytical and quantum hypnotherapeutic techniques are utilised as required or on request. It is even possible for sessions to be context / content free - whereby you do not need to state the exact nature of the problem at all.

Analytical techniques are appropriate where an issue has its roots in the past - but not all issues are rooted in the past and it is not always necessary (or beneficial) to go back to the past to resolve an issue in the present.

Quantum / humanistic approaches (NLP or hypnotherapy based) are suitable for those with belief systems that do not preclude e.g. the interconnectedness of everything and the concept of universal energy. For some people a less esoteric, more direct, logical approach may be more appropriate. At Changing States we will never force our belief systems onto you - we simply provide you with choices and options.

There are two broad styles of hypnotherapy - traditional and modern. Modern styles are more conversational and tend to use special effects to generate trance states. The approach adopted by Changing States is somewhere in between these two extremes e.g. special effects applied to a traditional countdown. When appropriate we also techniques that only use modern 'hitec' approaches.

What exactly is involved?

EMDR: Rapid Change

EMDR was originally developed in the USA to treat Vietnam veterans suffering from PTSD.

The approach has now been expanded and refined such that EMDR is now used to treat a wide variety of conditions. More about EMDR and EMDR Software...

An optional initial meeting (30 mins max) is often available to informally explore your needs and for you to ask any questions that you might have. This meeting is generally free of charge.

The number of hypnotherapy sessions required thereafter ranges from 1 to 3-5 sessions of approx 1-2 hours duration. If formal trance is used during the session you will probably experience the pleasant, relaxing feeling of being in trance for approx 30-45 mins.

Hypnotherapy sessions are generally customised to your individual needs and wants, and your beliefs are respected at all times. If you want a specific technique or approach to be used or avoided then mention this to your therapist and your treatment plan will be adjusted in accordance with your wishes.

Clinical hypnotherapy is often used in conjunction with EMDR, NLP techniques and cognitive / behavioural methods - the approach adopted is defined by the needs of the individual and the nature of the presenting issue(s).

Ongoing support is provided in terms of a free Client Support Zone accessed via this web-site, free information packs, free CDs, and boost sessions available as required.

What hypnotherapy is not

Click here for a hypnotherapy quiz to see how many misconceptions about hypnosis you have...

Hypnotherapy is not a magic wand that can cure all problems instantly. Results with hypnotherapy can often be very rapid, but this can vary greatly between individuals. On average treatment via hypnotherapy is more rapid than is the case via many other forms of psychotherapy.

Hypnotherapy is not an effort free treatment, it is however true to say that for some people the change process can appear to be almost effortless. In many cases you will be given things to do when back at home, relaxation techniques for example, and doing those things often vital to overall, long term success. As with all things in life you tend to get out of it what you put into it.

Although hypnotherapy can be very motivational and can amplify existing motivation, it is not a replacement for motivation. As with all forms of psychotherapy there needs to be a reasonable level of motivation present. If motivation is 0% and hypnotherapy can amplify motivation by eg 80% the result will always be 0% (0 x 80 = 0).

Psychotherapy generally is not necessary suitable for all people at all times. Sometimes a more pharmacological approach is much more appropriate. In such cases medication in effect opens the door and hypnotherapy can help thereafter to keep it open.
