Regression itself is often relatively easy to facilitate. The greater clinical challenge is deciding what to do when someone is back in the past.
The Hypnotherapist’s Guide to Regression is written for practising hypnotherapists, psychotherapists, NLP practitioners and advanced trainees who want a safe and controlled approach to regression work. The emphasis throughout is on therapist judgement rather than inflexible scripts.
Why I wrote this book
Regression can produce strong abreactions, unexpected associations, dissociation and memories whose accuracy cannot be assumed. A therapist therefore needs to know far more than simply how to take someone back to an earlier experience.
I wrote this book to address what happens after regression begins. It draws on more than 28 years of clinical experience and focuses on the practical decisions a therapist has to make during a session: what to explore, what to question, when to slow down, when to stabilise, when to change direction and when to stop.
The book does not present regression as appropriate for every patient. Nor does it assume that material recalled during hypnosis provides an accurate historical record. Preparation, informed consent, pacing, stabilisation, ethical safeguards and careful handling of memory are central throughout.
What the book covers
The book examines affect, association, dissociation, abreaction, inner child work, memory recoding, reframing, resource work, EMDR-informed processing and post-regression reflection. Different approaches are considered according to their clinical purpose rather than presented as techniques to apply routinely.
Inside you will find:
✅ Practical guidance for working safely in regressed states
✅ Clear explanations of common regression methods
✅ Clinical decision points for association, dissociation and abreaction
✅ Full scripts and suggested therapist wording
✅ Guidance on ethical risks, false memory concerns and court-related issues
✅ Techniques drawn from Clinical Hypnosis, NLP, EMDR, CBT, psychodynamic work and parts-based approaches
The emphasis is practical. The aim is to help you decide what to say, what to monitor and how to respond to what happens in the therapy room, including situations where continuing with regression would be inappropriate.
Who is the book for?
The book is intended primarily for trained therapists who already understand basic therapeutic and hypnotic practice. It is particularly relevant to practitioners who have learnt regression techniques but want more guidance on clinical management, risk, memory and the handling of difficult responses.
