Is it true that some employers abuse NLP to gain control over their workforce?

That is certainly possible, and NLP can certainly be seen as an underlying concept behind a number of advertising campaigns (particularly during US elections I believe). One of the most common approaches in business is to use the concept of "double binds" which involves several "choices" being presented to a person where none of the options presented are to the advantage of the person concerned. They are given choice without choice - catch 22 situations. Popular perhaps, but none the less highly destructive and arguably amoral.

Is it true what they say about some of the people that started the concept of NLP?

Post Message Bill Frost NLP 25/02/2005 11:29:38

That depends on what they say! No matter what they the early originators of NLP may or may not have done / been involved with, their choices as individuals should be separated from their research, to quote one of the NLP presuppositions "you are not your behaviour"!

Also, no matter what the originators did or did not do, the second generation of NLP advocates did much to undo some of that early bad press e.g. Tony Robins. Hopefully third generation practitioners such as myself "model" themselves on the second generation rather than some of the early actions of the first generation.

Specifically?

According to http://pview.findlaw.com/view/1749623_1 "In 1988 lawyer Mr. Schwartzbach representing the controversial co-founder of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, secured an acquittal of Richard Bandler in a celebrated Santa Cruz County Superior Court murder trial."

Is it fair to say that NLP has been abused by the corporate world?

Post Message Bill Frost NLP 25/02/2005 12:55:14
Yes and no. Psychology has certainly been abused and NLP is part of psychology. See this link for a US example. You decide if NLP 'specifically' was abused in this instance.
