Would counselling be the best option for someone that is not sure of the changes they need to make and has a problem with motivation. Could counselling be used before hypnotherapy to explore these issues that are holding you back?

Sometimes, I provide Counselling+ which is a highly goal directed form of counselling. In my view counselling only has substantial benefit when short term, goal directed and not a replacement for personal friendships. When counselling is used as a replacement for friendships a clear goal is being missed ie a need to step into the world and make positive links with other human beings. When counselling is longer term and is looping around a specific issue another goal is being missed ie deal with the original issue and move onwards. Even Freud accepted eventually that analysis was unlikely to generate change and that what would generate change was dealing with 'in the moment' issues and ultimately moving on from the past. Techniques that loop into the past too much have a tendency of perpetuating and / or reinforcing past reactions (retraumatisation / response reinforcement).

So what can you do if a person lacks motivation to change and that's preventing progress?

There are a number of methods for increasing motivation assuming that willingness is present. Where willingness is not present there is an issue, because no form of therapy can make someone do something that they just plain are totally unwilling to do eg because the proposed change of thinking fundamentally runs against personal value / belief systems. The CIA tried every possible approach to do so and did not succeed. Some level of willingness is an absolute requirement for all forms of therapy and all issues.

I understand, do you have any methods that can help a person to remain motivated during treatment?
