Topic = BLUSHING

 Post Message Anna HYPNOTHERAPY 04/03/2005 21:47:47
When I am socailizing with friends or new people, I get very hot and have blushing to my neck and chest. I have had a course of 12 psycho analyst sessions which have helped in other areas but not the blushing. What can you suggest to help me?

Blushing, or erythrophobia, happens "in the moment" and although a seeding event may be present the blushing can become a conditioned response over time. Because of this a more direct approach may now be appropriate having cleared any negative links into the past using analytical approaches. Such approaches would seek to link normal blood flow / calmness with trigger situations and / or would target the fear of blushing itself. NLP anchoring has been effective as a coping strategy for some. (I am assuming, for the record, that all physical causes have been eliminated already). See this page for more info.

It is also worth noting that excessive flushing is a frequent response to alcohol for some people and can be exaggerated by being in a stressful situation. This reaction is mainly an inherited physiological response and is due to the way in which alcohol is metabolised by some people. Because of this reactions of this type can only ever be partially addressed through psychological means.

For me, I think that blushing is probably one of my biggest fears of being in a group situation, especially when you have to speak and everyone is looking at you. I have always been shy but didn't experience blushing until I was about 18 and wonder if that can be related to something specific. Around that time I also started to experience what the GP diagnosed as nervous eczema, which was quite distressing because whenever I was going out socially one side of my face would go very red and I would have a burning, itchy sensation that would stay for the whole time I was out. I have no control over the blushing though and it just increases the anxiety of being in certain situations. Can hypnotherapy help with this.

Hypnotherapy can help by helping you to face the fear, because the blushing would not occur or would be much less noticeable if you were not afraid of it. It is natural and normal to blush, some more than others. What you notice is perhaps an amplification and extension of normal physiology, made worse by underlying levels of general anxiety. (Assuming that organic causes have been fully eliminated, which would appear to the case).
